PhD Scholarships

The LARC Overseas PhD Training Residency at Carnegie Mellon
In the 5 years between 2011 and 2015, a total of 40 SMU PhD students whose PhD work is directly linked to LARC projects will partake in this special overseas training residency at Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburg campus. SMU PhD students are selected for the LARC on a competitive basis.

During this residency, PhD students will conduct their dissertation research on LARC projects, under the joint supervision of SMU and CMU faculty.

PhD Overseas Training Residency at CMU

Between the second and fifth year (inclusive) of their candidature, LARC will support the PhD students for an overseas training residency at CMU for a continuous duration of 10 months. This is intended to enable students to be fully immersed in the CMU environment, while participating in LARC research activities. The research work may be counted against the Empirical Research Project (ERP) component of the PhD curriculum.

In addition, students will be eligible to enroll in formal courses at CMU. These courses are over and above the PhD curriculum requirements, but they will be recorded in the transcript.

A student may register for up to 2 CUs of ERPs, and up to 1 course at CMU in each academic term. The project and course selections require the prior approval of the LARC Co-Directors and the respective SMU PhD Program Directors.

Financial Support

LARC will cover the tuition fees and provide one return air-ticket to CMU for the overseas training residency. During this period, the students will receive a monthly living allowance, in addition to their regular scholarship stipends.
